Sydney Convicts RUFC

Woollahra Colleagues Rugby Union Football Club is proud to be home to The Sydney Convicts.

Since 1933 our club has held true on its simple value of offering a game of rugby for any man who wishes to play. In 2004 Woollahra Colleagues led the way with the creation of Australia’s first gay and inclusive Rugby team, the Sydney Convicts. Since then the Woollahra Colleagues and Sydney Convicts story has travelled the world and inspired players and clubs alike to create real social change in their communities and end homophobia in sport for good.

Today, The Convicts are the most successful club to have competed in the Bingham Cup, the world cup of gay rugby. The Convicts have won the Bingham Cup five times, as well as the Bingham Bowl, Plate and Shield.

Each year The Convicts compete in the local NSW ‘Subbies’ competition under the umbrella of Woollahra Colleagues RUFC. The team has won the competition on five occasions, most recently in 2016.

The Convicts are committed to building a competitive, social and diverse club which welcomes players from all levels of experience. The primary aim is the enjoyment of rugby in a prejudice free environment. Along the way to achieving this goal, the Convicts have broken down barriers and challenged stereotypes, not just on the rugby field but also in the wider community.

Testament to the success of the Woollahra Colleagues – Sydney Convicts relationship, this inclusive sports club model has been replicated by Rugby Clubs in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Johannesburg, Amsterdam, Auckland, Edinburgh and Ottawa.
