Old Colleagues News – August 2017

Season So Far
The good news is the club is well positioned in all grades to compete at the business end of season finals. Unfortunately the Club Championship has slipped us by with a narrow lost in the Kentwell Cup last weekend against competition leaders Petersham, the Blue Giants going down 27-25 (at a place called no parking for a mile oval). A couple of unlucky bounces and some fairly dodgy and unexplained decisions by the whistle blower going against us being the difference! (through my blue eyes)

With just two rounds to go, this week Saturday 12th August is our last home game and last chance for Old Colleagues to gather at headquarters and support the Blue Giants. Not only that It’s the Club’s second Ladies Day and with the continued expected good weather it should be a real carnival atmosphere as the Blue Giants take on Balmain Rugby.

Early Grand Final Win
This season has been a popular one for Blue Giant Colts with the club most weekends being able to field two teams. In a first for the club and a first in the Club’s history our Blue Giant Colts 2’s team played Lane Cove Colts 2’s at Tantallon Oval last week end securing a 48-28 win in non other than the Radford Cup. Old Colleagues will Tantallon Oval (concusion park) and of course the late great Ed Radford. A great day for all involved and congratulations to players and coaches Andrew and Richard, fantastic effort and hopefully more silverware to come.

Vale: Old Colleague Peter Herman

It is with sadness that I email to inform Old Colleagues of the passing of Peter Herman. Peter played with distinction for the Colleagues on the wing in the Kentwell Cup during the 1970’s.

A speedy and highly competitive winger Peter led the try scoring with 13 tries in the 1977 season. (A Club record for many years)
In 1978 Peter was awarded 100 games for the club (with the majority of them being in the first grade). Peter was a quietly spoken man with an engaging smile, popular with his peers he was an integral part of the Colleagues community during that 1970’s period.

Peter’s funeral held last Thursday was well represented by Old Colleagues. Peter had struggled with kidney problems over the last few years. While in hospital he contracted a staf infection which saw a serious deterioration in his health.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Herman family at this time. His family can be reassured that he was well regarded by many Old Colleagues. And plenty of lasting fond memories remain at the club and with club members.
