Old Colleagues News June 2017

OLD COLLEAGUE DAY 22ND JULY
Old Colleagues your attendance is required at Blue Giant Park for the games against Waverley Rugby Club. Should be a great afternoon with very competitive rugby. Plenty of memories of great clashes with Waverley in the 1980’s.

Season So Far!

Since the May news not a great deal has made the headlines. A close game against the undefeated Petersham losing 27-21 and then a loss away to Balmain (played without our 6 Subbies Team Representatives plus a number of key injured giants missing).

The Petersham game was a very tough and lively affair with the lead changing hands several times during the game. Every time the Blue Giants looked to have the Shammies measure a Giant error would occur or the Giant’s took a wrong option as they say! A close win by the Competition leaders and they enjoyed edging out the Colleagues once again in their short history back in the Kentwell Cup.
Petersham as a club were well organised in all grades, it was evident they have developed a strong club culture (read inner city larrikin) , however their fashion sense was a little off beat and they also lost the skulls after the speeches in the clubhouse (read it and weep lads) !

Nevertheless what the game proved was if this is the standard then the Blue Giants at their best are up to their eyeballs in the Kentwell Cup Competition!

This weekend Sat 24th June its crunch time for the Colleagues at home to Mosman. A strong club performance is required to keep in touch with Club Championship leaders Drummoyne. Its looking like perfect conditions for rugby and the big screen in the club house will have the international games on as well. Rugby Heaven by any definition, get on down and support the Giants I’m sure its appreciated by the boys in blue.

Long Lunch Post Script

Wal Carpenter (1980’s back row flyer) found himself feeling a bit crook at the Long lunch. Fortunately post lunch excitement Wal did the sensible thing and got checked out by the medicos!!!!
resulting in”last minute” coronary bypass surgery. I’m told Wal’s chest looks like a test sheet from a singer sowing factory, however best news is that he is making a steady recovery and looking forward to future Blue Giant long lunches! Email get well soon to walter@wrcarpenters.com

Show us your Speedos

Old Colleague Greg Quinn is our first Blue Giant to feature in a new Series in the monthly news.
“Show us your Speedos”
In this series I am asking Old Colleagues from far and wide to send a pic modelling the Colleague Speedo. Quinny does a great job with our first pic, former fighting fit tight head prop seen here at Trisara Resort in Phuket recently has obviously been in a good paddock but has the Blue Giant class to pull off a great pic! (go you good thing)

Old Colleague Stars at Briars Lunch

Colleagues member of 60 years standing, Life Member John (Wal) Corliss
was recently honoured at a luncheon with a presentation from Briars Rugby’s
Richard Crookes for coaching the Subbies team (circ)1964 that has been
described as the team that saved subbies rugby’s standing in relation to 2nd div.
(Details are vague but apparently a highly competitive situation in the 60’s) Congrats Wal, I’m sure there are plenty of yarns to be told about this victory. (Wals Pic here with 5ths James robbo)
