Old Colleagues News – June 2016

SEASON SO FAR

Except for this recent week this news might be mistaken as a memo from the Bureau of Meteorology. The big wet plus a long weekend has restricted play to just one round completed since the May newsletter.
So I’m taking this opportunity to report on a unique event down the road and at the same time ensure that the content of this newsletter extends to more than three lines. As part of the Bondi Winter Magic promotion by Waverley Council there are camel rides now happening down at Bondi Beach. I’m not sure that they’ve been enjoying all this rain, but I guess it beats the hell out of being stuck in the desert and relying solely on the storage capacity of your hump. (something I can relate to)

(Back to the rugby) Magnificent men were at their best when they travelled to Knox last weekend producing some fine running rugby founded on a strong forward and set piece platform. Not easy to win away against Knox especially for the Burke Cup who played tough rugby against what looked like an all nations invitation team with no similarity to the Knox team the Blue Giants played in the  first round! Best part is our retaining of the Club Championship goal is still going strong and the club is continuing with the “catch me if you can attitude”. This will be fully tested on the must attend Ladies Day home ground game against the Mosman whales (can be slightly confused with camels) on the 30th July.

Very importantly Old Colleagues should note that the round that was washed out on the 4th June, Round 8 is to be played this weekend at home 25th June Vs Drummoyne.

Because of the Wallaby Test match at Homebush that night all games are to be played 30 minutes before normal kickoff. Kentwell @ 2.45, Burke @ 1.45, Whiddon @ 12.45 etc. (I can hear you say thats probably giving the game more respect than it deserves at this is point}

OLD COLLEAGUES DAY
Old Colleagues day is now rescheduled to the 9th July for the games against St Pats at home. Unfortunately the big wet wiped out out first attempt  so start now getting the word out for the better drier revamped version on the 9th. St Pats are living in struggle street at this point, will they be relegated for the first time ??

ED RADFORD STORY
A story emerged from the Late Ed Radford’s wake well attended by Old Colleagues. This story told by Eddie’s daughter Libby is worth relaying. Libby remembers being led down to the Colleagues most home Saturdays (all day and nights) by her dad ( she was aged about 9 or 10 at the time). Her mum at that time a teacher and also a Sunday school teacher would also take her to church on the following Sunday. One Sunday morning the kids at church school were asked to sing a hymn or similar religious song of their liking. Libby knew just what to sing, something she heard many times the previous night !

“He’s a Colleague he’s true blue”
“He’s a Colleague he’s true blue”

“He tried to go to heaven but he went the other way”
Is this proof that the Colleagues is a religion after all !
See you Saturday
