Grand Final Week

GRAND FINALS: Five from Six Up for Grabs for Blue Giants

For the first time since 2011, the Woollahra Colleagues Rugby Union Football Club will have at five sides competing for Suburban Rugby Division 1 Grand Finals, after the Burke, Whiddon, Judd, Sutherland and Barbour Cup teams had successful semi-final campaigns over the last two weekends.

Grand Final victories would be icing on the cake for the Blue Giants after claiming the Club Championship and four minor premierships so far this season. A victory for the Colts would be especially outstanding, as it was nine years ago that they last held the Barbour Cup in 2006.

Colleagues Burke, Whiddon and Sutherland Cup teams will also be looking to go back to back after their wins in the 2014 Grand Finals.

Blue Brick Road to the GF

In the first week of semi-finals at the David Phillip Field, it took a while for Colleagues as a whole to warm up for. The Sutherland Cup boys fought out a 10 all draw against Petersham but thankfully progressed as they were the higher ranked team at the end of the regular season.

Judd Cup also fought out a gripping match but went down to St Pats in the final minutes of the match by a single point. Thankfully the Campbell-Avenell/Monteath coached side had a second chance last Saturday against Mosman and were triumphant 28 points to 8.

In third grade it was all Colleagues for three quarters of the match, with the Blue Giants getting out to a comfortable 32-6 lead early in the second half. Mosman’s come back was too little too late, so Dingo’s men progress to the GF.

In equally impressive matches in both intensity and skill, Colleague’s Barbour and Burke Cup teams dominated their Mosman rivals right across the park. Physicality at the breakdown, strength at the set piece and execution out wide ensured the Whales were never really let in the game. Great rugby!

• Burke – Colleagues 22 – 9 Mosman
• Widdon – Colleagues 32 – 20 Mosman
• Judd – Semi Final 1: Colleagues 20 – 21 Old St Pats – Semi Final 2: Colleague 28 – 8 Mosman
• Sutherland – Colleagues 10 – 10 Petersham (Colleagues progress)
• Barbour – Colleagues 29 – 17 Mosman
